Learning from your obstetrician or midwife that you have a high-risk pregnancy can be very concerning, whether you are on your first pregnancy or already carrying your second or third child. A pregnancy is considered high-risk when there are complications that threaten the health and life of the mother, the baby, or both. In this case, special monitoring and extra care are necessary throughout pregnancy to ensure the safety of both mother and child.

It is possible to have a normal pregnancy initially and then develop certain conditions that put you at high risk. Some, on the other hand, are already at increased risk for complications even before their pregnancy due to several reasons.

In both these cases, regular and early prenatal checkups and care are beneficial to ensure healthy pregnancies and deliveries.

Unfortunately, high-risk pregnancy is not always avoidable. However, some risk factors, such as lifestyle habits and chronic conditions, can be controlled and treated even before getting pregnant, so as to reduce the risks.

It is essential to stay healthy before and during pregnancy to lower the risks for complications. It is recommended for women to visit their healthcare providers even before becoming pregnant so that they can be in good and optimal health in preparation for their pregnancy.

During pregnancy, one way to stay healthy is avoiding alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, as well as exposure to toxic substances, such as pesticides, radiation, and certain chemicals. Maintaining a healthy diet and a healthy weight are also beneficial during your pregnancy.

Talk to your healthcare provider who will guide you throughout your pregnancy to ensure that you and your baby are safe and healthy. If you don’t have a healthcare provider, make an appointment with any of our Obstetricians and Midwifes at Garnet Health Doctors by calling 845-333-7575.
